In the introduction to Sefer Hanigunim, the Frierdiker Rebbe explains that the composer of a song invests his nefesh into the song. Therefore, when we listen to a song, we are deeply affected by the nefesh of the composer. Many of these songs can easily be altered to the tune of niggunim.
